READING PRACTICE

Build a reading habit by making the next session easier to start.

Updated September 7, 2026 · 7 minute read

A dependable reading habit is rarely built by waiting for a perfect stretch of motivation. It is built by reducing the work required to begin, choosing a commitment you can keep, and returning after ordinary interruptions. The goal is not to prove discipline through suffering. It is to make reading a familiar place to return to.

Choose a minimum that still matters

Start with a session small enough to complete on an uneven day. One thousand words, ten minutes, or one passage can be enough. A minimum is not a ceiling. It is a reliable floor that keeps the practice available when life is busy.

The most useful question is not “how much should I read?” but “what amount would make me trust myself to return tomorrow?” Choose that amount first. You can always read more after you begin.

Attach reading to an existing cue

Habits become easier when they have a clear starting condition. Read after making coffee, after closing your work laptop, before opening social media, or during a predictable break. The cue should be specific and visible. “I will read more” is a wish; “after lunch, I will open one Velocity session” is a plan.

Prepare the environment before motivation arrives

Keep the app easy to open, remove unnecessary notifications, and decide where you will sit. Environment does not replace intention, but it can stop friction from deciding for you. If the reader is already available and the session length is already chosen, the beginning becomes lighter.

Expect missed days and define the return

A missed day does not erase the practice. The important part is how you restart. Avoid compensating with an impossible session or turning a gap into a story about your character. Use a simple rule: after a missed day, do the smallest meaningful session at the next available cue.

Let evidence change your self-talk

Completed sessions are evidence. They show that you can make a decision and follow through, even when the decision is small. Keep the interpretation humble and useful: you do not need to be perfect to be someone who reads; you need to return often enough that the identity feels true.

Start with a clear session

Velocity lets you choose a 1,000- to 10,000-word session and adjust the reading pace as you go. Begin with the smallest useful promise.
