ATTENTION PRACTICE
Reduce digital distraction without making reading another punishment.
Distraction is not evidence that you are incapable of focus. Digital products are designed to make attention easy to redirect, and your day may contain real demands that need responses. A useful reading practice does not require a perfect environment. It creates enough distance from the most predictable interruptions for attention to have a chance.
Remove the easiest interruption first
Do not attempt to solve every distraction at once. Start with the one that pulls you away most reliably: turn off a nonessential notification, place your phone out of reach, close a tab, or set the app to full screen. One small environmental change can make the first few minutes noticeably easier.
Give the session a boundary
It is easier to protect a specific 10-minute or 1,000-word session than an undefined intention to “focus more.” A boundary tells you what you are saying yes to and when you will be free to check anything else. You do not need to ignore the world for hours; you need a clear interval in which reading is the priority.
Use the return instead of the reaction
When you notice the urge to check something, name it without arguing with yourself. Then return to the next word. The goal is not to eliminate every urge. It is to practice the gap between the urge and the action. That gap is where a chosen response becomes possible.
Keep recovery ordinary
If you do check a message or lose your place, avoid turning the interruption into a reason to abandon the session. Close the interruption, use the rewind control if needed, and continue. A practical reset is quiet and immediate. It does not need a dramatic promise.
Review the conditions that worked
After a few sessions, look for patterns. Was reading easier at a particular time? Did a shorter session help? Was a certain WPM setting less stressful? These observations are more useful than generic advice because they describe your actual attention in your actual life.
Make the next return simple
Velocity uses a clean reader mode with controls that step back while you read, then return when you need them. Choose a short session and practice staying with the next word.
