PRACTICAL GUIDE

Focused speed reading starts with the right pace.

Updated September 7, 2026 · 5 minute read

Speed reading is useful when it helps you stay with a text, not when it turns every sentence into a race. The most productive pace is the fastest one at which you can remain relaxed, understand the material, and return to the next session willingly.

Start below your limit

Choose a speed that feels almost easy for the first few minutes. If your eyes tense, you lose the point of a sentence, or you feel compelled to start over repeatedly, lower the pace. A sustainable session creates better evidence than a frantic one.

Use short sessions to learn your baseline

Begin with a single focused block. Notice whether you can explain the central idea afterward. If comprehension is intact, raise the pace gradually on the next session. Velocity lets you adjust WPM during a read, so the setting can follow your attention instead of forcing it.

Protect the conditions for focus

Put your phone away, silence unnecessary notifications, and decide in advance when the session ends. Focus improves when the task has a clear boundary. Reading one thousand words with care is a more useful practice than opening a ten-thousand-word session with no intention of staying with it.

Measure progress honestly

A higher WPM number is not the only sign of progress. Finishing a session, returning after distraction, and choosing a pace that preserves meaning are all real wins. Use speed as a setting, not a score.

Try it in Velocity

Set a session length, choose a calm starting pace, and use the reader controls to adjust as your focus changes.
